About Take Action SWVA
Neighbors standing up together for constitutional government, free elections, and the communities of far Southwest Virginia.
Mobilizing the resistance in far Southwest Virginia
Take Action SWVA is a grassroots civic organization affiliated with Indivisible, the national network of local groups defending democracy. We are ordinary people — across party lines — who believe that an engaged community is the strongest defense against the erosion of democratic norms.
Founded in the heart of Appalachia, we organize in Russell, Smyth, Scott, and Washington counties. Our work is nonpartisan in method and nonviolent in action. We show up at town halls, flood phone lines, rally at courthouses, and make sure every neighbor knows they have a voice.
General Purpose
Take Action SWVA is committed to nonviolence. Our mission is to build a bold grassroots resistance in Southwest Virginia, uniting our communities to stand up to authoritarianism, defend our Constitution, and keep democracy alive and thriving for all.
Goals
- Expand involvement across Southwest Virginia so more people can vote, speak out, and lead.
- Organize local communities for nonviolent action and sustained civic engagement.
- Expose and peacefully resist authoritarian threats to democracy.
- Use the National Indivisible Guide to hold elected officials accountable.
We are not a PAC. We are not a party committee. We are your neighbors.
Our Pillars
Free & Fair Elections
We defend voting rights and electoral integrity across Southwest Virginia — monitoring legislation, turning out voters, and fighting voter suppression in every form.
Civil Liberties
The Bill of Rights belongs to everyone. We protect constitutional rights for every community member — including due process, free speech, and equal protection under the law.
Community Organizing
Durable change comes from people-power, not just politics. We build relationships across our region so that neighbors know each other, trust each other, and act together.
Appalachian Identity
We are proud of where we come from. Our organizing reflects the values of this region — self-reliance, mutual aid, and a deep commitment to the land and people of Southwest Virginia.
People Power in Action
Part of a Nationwide Movement
Take Action SWVA is a proud member of the Indivisible network — thousands of local groups across the country using the same playbook that stopped the first repeal of the ACA and continues to hold elected officials accountable. We are locally led and community-funded. National resources and strategy, Southwest Virginia roots.
